The Oxyhemoglobin Dissociation Curve in Acute Disease

When there is evidence of cellular hypoxia, improving the fraction of inspired oxygen and minute volume may not be sufficient. In addition to the cardiac output and the red cell mass, a shift of the oxygen dissociation curve resulting from excessive banked blood, acid-base abnormalities, or lack of phosphates in hyperalimentation feeding can affect oxygen delivery.
