Principles of Tendon Structure, Healing, and the Microenvironment
2023, Hand ClinicsInfluence of Aging on Microvascular Supply of the Gluteus Medius Tendon: A Cadaveric and Histologic Study
2017, Arthroscopy - Journal of Arthroscopic and Related SurgeryCitation Excerpt :This finding suggests that the tendinous integrity is at risk in this hypovascular area as aging increases. This “hypovascular zone” has been reported previously in other tendons such as the classic “Codman's critical zone” in the supraspinatus18 and, more recently, in the quadriceps tendon, suggesting a correlation with the location of a spontaneous tear of this tendon.12 The lack of blood penetration to critically hypovascular zones of other tendons may be due to extrinsic factors such as region compression,19 for instance, the iliotibial band compressing the gluteus medius tendon against the greater trochanter.
The arterial supply of the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii in the human: A combined anatomical and radiological study
2014, Annals of AnatomyCitation Excerpt :The superior and anterosuperior portions of the labrum were also found to be less vascularized than the posterior and inferior portions (Cooper et al., 1992). In addition, tendons consume significant quantities of oxygen (Peacock, 1959; Smith, 1965). Oxygen may be compromised by any type of surgical intervention, such as suture anchors used for SLAP repair.
