Abstract

A novel l-arginine derivative was synthesized and its interactions with ATP in aqueous solutions were demonstrated by fluorescence, UV–vis, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. A two-input NAND logic gate was presented on the basis of this single molecule.

Based on the optical output and inputs signal, some computing devices, including keyboard data switches, molecular keypad locks, encoders, decoders, etc., could be framed to understand better the more complex design and functionality of molecule-based computing devices. In recent decades, tremendous research interest has been focused on crafting the various molecular logic circuits based on chemically encoded inputs and optical output signal strategy [53–60]. Therefore, the logic gates based on chemical inputs and optical output signals could be an alternative and more promising computing device than electronic ones shortly, particularly visualizing the acid-base reaction spectrophotometrically and colorimetrically.

Present trends in the miniaturization of electronic devices suggest that ultimately single molecules may be used as electronically active elements in a variety of applications [1–5]. In the last years, several examples of molecular system capable to behave as logic gaits have been reported [6–9]. These logic gates usually process various inputs (chemical, electrical and optical) and generate light output signals, operating in a wireless mode.
