Abstract

Some issues raised in the subject paper [Hillert M, Ågren J. Scr Mat 2004;50:697–9. [1]] are addressed, and it is suggested that the term “constrained paraequilibrium” (CPE) is useful and shares a common ancestry with paraequilibrium. Paraequilibrium can be useful to describe the endpoint of a transformation, in addition to conditions at a migrating interface. CPE is unlikely to apply under conditions where there is appreciable mobility of substitutional alloying elements.

  • Batch annealing enhances the yield strength of a high quenching temperature Q&P steel through accelerated bainitic transformation

As promising candidates for third generation AHSS, quenching and partitioning (Q&P) steels witnessed great progress in the first two decades of the 21st century [8–11]. In a typical two-step Q&P process, after partial/full austenitization of the steel plates, the steel is first quenched to quenching tempering (QT) below the martensite start temperature (MS) and then raised to the partitioning temperature (PT) for carbon partitioning before the final quenching to room temperature [8,9,12]. Carbon enrichment stabilizes retained austenite to room temperature, providing sustained strain hardening through the transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect during straining [13,14].

% from sample Q (Figs. 2 and 4, and Table 1). The C partitioning, widely considered as a process consistent with the ‘constrained C equilibrium’ model [29–31], is controlled by the slower C diffusion in austenite [32]. Indeed, the diffusion coefficients of C in austenite (4.78 × 10−16 m2s−1) at 350 °C is three orders less than the value (1.81 × 10−13 m2s−1) in martensite [9,33].
