Abstract

The synthesis, spectral and magnetic characterization and the molecular and 3D structure of a double dicyanamide-bridged Cu(II) chain compound are described. The axial ligands are 4-Mepyrimidine. The Jahn–Teller axis of the Cu(II) ion is directed towards one dicyanamide pair (Cu-N = 2.393 Å); the short Cu-N distances are around 2.00 Å. Magnetic exchange interactions between the Cu(II) ions are weak, as deduced from EPR, and can be explained by the different orientations of the Jahn–Teller axes of the molecular units, resulting in no overlap between the magnetic orbitals.

Graphical abstract

A linear chain formed by Cu(II) with bridging anionic dicyanamide ligands and an axial methylpyrimidine ligand is reported.

Highlights

► End-on bridged dicyanamide anions binding to Copper(II). ► A polymeric chain of Cu(II) with bridging anionic dicyanamido ligands is reported. ► The long Cu(II)-Cu(II) distance (7.42 Å) does not result in significant magnetic exchange coupling.

The crystal structures of 4 and 5 are shown in Figs. 5 and 6, respectively. The Co1–N(bpy) bond distances and the N10–Co1–N10i bite angles in 4 and 5 are very similar and are close to the corresponding averaged values observed in other [Co(bpy)]2+ complexes [33]. Other bond distances and angles within the planar bpy ligands (the largest deviation of atoms from the mean planes being 0.032(1) Å for C12 in 4 and 0.027(2) Å for C14 atom in 5) are close to the values observed in other [Co(bpy)]2+ complexes [33] as well as to the values within the bpy ligand itself [34].

The polymers 3–5 contain dicyanamide as the bridging ligand which can bridge in different ways through its two or three nitrogen atoms. There are many coordination complexes in which dicyanamide acts as the spacer [18–23,65–80]. However, only some of those systems contain di/trinuclear metal complexes [18–23,81], derived from the above mentioned single-/double-compartment ligands, as nodes.
