    Muscle fibers atrophy quite rapidly (Burnett and Zager, 2004). Fibrotic changes can be detected in the muscle as early as 3 weeks postinjury (Kline, 2008a). If the muscle is not reinnervated, fibrosis gradually progresses and will replace the muscle completely within about 2 years (Guttmann and Young, 1944).
