The midlife menopause transition (MT) in women is a critical period of change for bone health, with many, but not all, women losing a substantial amount of bone mass and quality.

2021, ChestCitation Excerpt :CT-determined emphysema is associated with both low volumetric bone mineral density assessed on CT scan using a bone phantom42 and low areal bone mineral density measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA),43 even after adjustment for competing risk factors including age, sex, airflow obstruction, and corticosteroid use. Notably, the presence of any emphysema conferred greater than 2.5 times the risk of low bone mineral density in a tobacco-exposed cohort,43 and moderate to severe CT-determined emphysema associated with accelerated bone mineral density loss,41 an independent risk factor for fracture.44 The thoracic vertebrae themselves are also easily evaluated on routine clinical chest CT imaging.
