Abstract

Cyclosporine A (CyA) is a potent immunosuppressive agent with a selective and reversible inhibitory effect on T-cell functions, especially interleukin-2 production. The drug is not myelotoxic, mutagenic, or teratogenic and is extremely effective in preventing rejection of grafted organs. Over the last 5 years it has been used increasingly in the treatment of severe psoriasis and in a vast array of autoimmune and inflammatory skin diseases. In general, it has proved effective and, although its long-term safety remains to be assessed, has provided a new tool in the therapeutic armamentarium of dermatologists.
