Abstract

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to investigate the interface formed between thermally and plasma treated polyparaphenylene-vinylene thin films and an aluminium layer deposited on them. Enhancement in adhesion of the metal on thermally treated polymer films is explained by the structural change of aluminum. In contrast, plasma treatments induce morphological modifications of the polymer surface and favor the formation of compounds between the polymer and the metal which in turn improve the adhesive strength.

The obtained spectra of C 1 s at 284.4 eV are used as reference spectra to adjust further and deconvolute the peak of interest. The C 1 s spectra of MgNCs deconvoluted into five peaks with binding energies at 284.4 eV (sp2 hybridized carbon)(Mérel et al., 1998), 284.8 eV (sp3 hybridized carbon)(Wu et al., 2007), 285.7 eV (CN)(Zhang et al., 2013), 287.5 eV(CO)(Nguyen et al., 1995) and 287.7 eV (CO)(Ghodbane et al., 2010). XPS spectra of MgNCs were obtained and displayed in Fig. 2(a,b).

Two peaks at 530.9 and 532.5 eV were identified in the deconvoluted O 1s peak. The peaks at 530.9 and 532.5 eV were assigned to metal oxide [35,40], and the CO (carbonyl) and hydroxyl groups [41,42], respectively. Three peaks were identified in the deconvoluted C 1s peak, at 285.4, 287, and 289.2 eV.

In the high resolution Al (2p) spectra of Mont.KSF, the peaks at 74.9 represent binding energy corresponding to octahedrally coordinated aluminium in the clay layers, while the peak at 75.8 is assigned to the binding energy of Al3+ in AlOH. Deconvoluted Al (2p) spectra of the nanocomposite contain three main peaks at 74.6 (AlOC), 75.9 (AlOAl) and 76.8 (AlOH) Kerstin et al., 2011; Iwona et al., 2009; Flament et al., 1990; Nguyen et al., 1995. The presence of peaks corresponding to SiOC and AlOC suggests covalent bonding between clay and graphene layers.
