2000, Synthetic MetalsNew mechanistic aspects on the formation of poly(isothianaphthene) from P<inf>4</inf>S<inf>10</inf> and phthalic anhydride derivatives: Carbon-carbon bond formation and cleavage via a cyclic reaction mechanism
2000, PolymerCitation Excerpt :Poly(isothianaphthene) (PITN) (9) (Fig. 1) has received substantial interest in the past years, since it is a low bandgap polymer [1,2]. In 12 years many synthetic routes to PITN (9) have been reported in the literature [3–8]. We could show that PITN can be derived from the reaction of phthalic anhydride (1) with a thionating reagent (phosphorus pentasulphide (P4S10) or Lawessons' reagent) [7].
Electroformation of conducting polymers in a hydrogel support matrix
2000, PolymerCitation Excerpt :Conducting polymers also undergo chemical and physical changes in response to electrical stimuli. Ion exchange capacity [6], protein affinity [7], or enzyme bioactivity [8], tensile strength [9], conductivity [10] and optical properties [11–14], all change in response to the imposition of appropriate electrical potentials. Despite the promising electrofunctional attributes of both classes of polymers there are several limitations that mitigate against their use in practical applications and/or devices.
