Abstract

We report Raman scattering measurements between 4 K and 300 K on oxidized (as grown) and reduced poly(3-methylthiophene) films. For oxidized material the CC bond stretching vibrational frequency is found to increase linearly from 1450 to 1470 cm−1 with incident laser energy between 1.96 and 2.81 eV possibly due to disorder. Up to four overtones of this mode were observed, as well as combination bands with lower frequency modes. A broad background scattering is attributed to charge carriers. Some of the reduced samples show, in addition to these features, strong luminescence at 6200 Å.

The band at 1152 cm−1 was assigned to the antisymmetric stretching vibration of CC bonds [29], whereas another interesting band observed at 1223 cm−1 in P3MT had been attributed to the interring CC stretching [30]. The bands ascribable to the CH in-plane deformation vibration was observed at 1048 cm−1 [31]. The bands at 748 cm−1 were related to CSC in-plane deformation [32].
