Polysaccharide-silicate composite hydrogels: Review on synthesis and drug delivery credentials

2022, Food ChemistryCitation Excerpt :However, alginate gel has physico-chemical limitations. Alginate gel is permeable and will experience shrinkage during formation and during storage in acidic environment due to electrostatic attraction between carboxylate groups of alginate and cations, resulting in the extraction of water from the gel networks (syneresis) (Ostberg, Lund, & Graffner, 1994; Dashevsky, 1998; Matricardi, Meo, Coviello, & Alhaique, 2008; Mai, Tran, & Le, 2013). Those drawbacks reduce the effectiveness of the water-soluble materials encapsulation (George & Abraham, 2007).
Poly (vinyl alcohol)-alginate as potential matrix for various applications: A focused review
2022, Carbohydrate PolymersAlginates as tablet disintegrants: Understanding disintegration mechanisms and defining ranges of applications
2021, International Journal of PharmaceuticsCitation Excerpt :This is because, in PB, polymer swelling hindered the capillary action. Moreover, the gradual solubilisation/gelling of CA and AA in PB (Østberg et al., 1994) might have increased the viscosity of the penetrating medium, thus further reducing the wicking velocity (Ekmekciyan et al., 2018). In conclusion, the viscous gelling of SA precluded both rapid wicking and swelling, indicating that this polymer is not a suitable disintegrant.
