2023, International Journal of Hydrogen EnergyCitation Excerpt :According to this theory, gas permeation is expressed by the combination of gas dissolution at the interface and inner gas diffusion in the different regions of the ionomer [38,62,63]. Some simulation results [62,64–66] verified that both the density of ionomer and distribution of the oxygen concentration [61,62] are not uniform through the thickness direction (Fig. 2a). The permeability path can be divided into five parts due to differences in structure and properties, such as density and permeability, that is gas phase region, ionomer/gas interface, bulk area, ionomer/Pt interface, and Pt surface (Fig. 1c).
Coupling effects of water content, temperature, oxygen density, and polytetrafluoroethylene loading on oxygen transport through ionomer thin film on platinum surface in catalyst layer of proton exchange membrane fuel cell
2022, International Journal of Hydrogen EnergyCitation Excerpt :In the simulation cases it can be found that there are oxygen molecules which are blocked in pores of the ionomer thin films, due to the inhomogeneous structure of the ionomer thin film. This phenomenon, or the so-called concentration polarization, has been studied by Heintz et al. [56], and the authors stated that such blocking led to peaks in the oxygen concentration distributions. However, the blocking is considered to be of minor importance for oxygen flux [56].
