Polarized VUV absorption and reflection spectra of oriented films of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (CF<inf>2</inf>)<inf>n</inf> and its model compound

Polarized vacuum-UV absorption and reflection spectra were measured for oriented films of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) (CF₂)_n and its model compound perfluorotetracosane (PFT) n-C₂₄F₅₀. The lowest energy excitation leading to an intense peak was found to be polarized along the molecular chain, and its energy decreases with the chain length (8.05 eV for PFT and 7.66 eV for PTFE). The polarization and chain-length dependence are discussed with the aid of information by theoretical calculation, NEXAFS, and electron transmission spectroscopy.

The characterization of surface modifications of polymers, after irradiation with X-ray or UV photons, is abundant in the XPS literature, reporting from core level analysis the modification of surface chemical composition (loss of fluorine, or chlorine, or oxygen … content). This work focuses on the use of XPS valence band spectra to show that irradiation can lead to superficial structural modification — lateral chain grafting, or crosslinking — of so-called “reactive” (polytetrafluoroethylene) and even more “stable” (polypropylene and polyethylene) polymers: this is best evidenced by modification of the typical shape of the C_2s valence band. This structural modification appears more pronounced for high fluence UV excimer laser irradiation in air, than for (more moderate) exposition to harder X-rays in vacuo.
Valence zone electronic structure of phthalide-based polymers

Charge iterated parameters for extended Hückel calculations on polytetrafluoroethylene: relevance to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Tight-binding band calculations of the extended Hückel type were performed on polytetrafluoroethylene in order to probe the effect of the atomic orbital parameters on the bonding in the polymer. Comparison was made with previous extended Hückel and ab initio calculations, as well as with experimental data. It was found that the original parameterization of Hoffmann makes the CF bond too polar and should be corrected, as prescribed by Gray. With these corrections, the Hoffmann formulation for extended Hückel calculations allows a reasonable, albeit approximate, simulation of the X-ray photoelectron spectrum.
Modification of polytetrafluoroethylene and polyethylene surfaces downstream from helium microwave plasmas

Films of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyethylene (PE) were treated downstream from a helium microwave plasma. Vacuum ultraviolet radiation induces reduction in deionized water contact angle, probably as a result of crosslinking and desaturation of these linear, saturated polymers. Photons with energies greater than the first ionization potentials of PTFE and PE were shown to be most effective for modification. Valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to determine these ionization potentials. XPS analyses also revealed that simultaneous exposure to high energy (19·8 eV) He metastables and photons (12 eV to 54 eV) results in extensive defluorination of the surface of PTFE while PE surfaces display enrichment in CO bonding. The latter is attributed to the presence of carbonyl impurities in the untreated PE and/or reaction of surface sites with oxygen upon exposure to air.
