The interruption of thyroid and interrenal and the inter-hormonal interference in fish: Does it promote physiologic adaptation or maladaptation?
2011, General and Comparative EndocrinologyCitation Excerpt :Similarly, an interaction of thyroid and interrenal axis occur at the central level as a decreased plasma cortisol has been found in carp after T4 injection [24]. A stimulatory effect of THs on the interrenal axis has been demonstrated in coho salmon [103], probably because of the need of an increased clearance of T3 by cortisol in this fish as reported in European eels [79] and coho salmon [78]. The results of other studies also indicate a rapid clearance of T3 after cortisol treatment.
The role of thyroid hormones in stress response of fish
2011, General and Comparative EndocrinologyCitation Excerpt :On the other hand, excess T3 has been shown to stimulate the interrenal tissue to produce more cortisol in freshwater tilapia [111] and perch (V.S. Peter, M.C.S. Peter, unpublished). This may lead to an increased clearance of T3 since there is evidence for cortisol-stimulated T3 clearance in European eels [136] and salmonids [135,168]. Brown and coworkers [19] report a similar interaction of cortisol with THs in rainbow trout.
Cortisol promotes and integrates the osmotic competence of the organs in North African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell): Evidence from in vivo and in situ approaches
2010, General and Comparative EndocrinologyCitation Excerpt :For example, changes in the status of thyroid have been shown to affect the cortisol-directed stress response of Mozambique tilapia (Peter, 2007). Suppression of plasma T3 by cortisol has also been reported in European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch; Redding et al., 1986). In contrast, hyperthyroidism evoked a marked reduction in the basal plasma cortisol level in Cyprinus carpio (Geven et al., 2009) but stimulated cortisol release in Oreochromis mossambicus (Peter and Peter, 2009).
The involvement of thyroid hormones and cortisol in the osmotic acclimation of Solea senegalensis
2008, General and Comparative EndocrinologyCitation Excerpt :Also, thyrotropic actions of centrally administered CRH in goldfish (Carassius auratus) in vivo have been reported (de Pedro et al., 1995). Effects of peripherally administered hormones were observed in European eel (Anguilla anguilla) where cortisol treatment reduced plasma T4 levels; a similar same treatment had no effect in O. mykiss, however (Redding et al., 1986, 1991; Leatherland, 1987). Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) with experimentally induced hyperthyroidism developed a marked hypocortisolemia, and this correlated with increased hypothalamic mRNA levels of CRH-binding protein, an endogenous CRH antagonist (Geven et al., 2006).
