    Although the apicoplast encodes a limited protein repertoire, inhibitors that specifically target its translation are inimical to parasite survival (reviewed in [13–15]). The linear mitochondrial genome of apicomplexans ranges in size from 6.0 kb in Plasmodium spp. [16] to 8.2 kb in Theileria equi, the former being the smallest known to date [17]. Apart from fragmented rRNA, it only encodes apocytochrome b (Cytb) and cytochrome oxidase I and III (Cox1 and 3) [16].
