Abstract

4-Aminobiphenyl and diphenylanaine were electropolymerized in acidic and organic media to produce poly (4-aminobiphenyl) and poly (diphenylamine), respectively. The resulting polymers present similar cyclic voltammograms and FTIR spectra. 4-aminobiphenyl undergoes the usual C-N head-to-tail coupling while diphenylamine follows a 4,4' C-C phenyl-phenyl coupling.

In all three cases, the cyclic voltammograms show two oxidation maxima. Former of lower current density is peaked in the potential range (+0.2; +0.5) V, this being assigned to DPA cation radicals, while the second one, of high current density, situated in the potential range (+0.6; +0.96) V is attributed to the formation of N, N′-diphenylbenzidine and its dications [12–14]. As the cyclic voltammograms number increases from 1 to 50 cycles, the first anodic maximum decreases in the current density simultaneously with a shift to the higher oxidation potentials while the second anodic maximum decreases in the current density.

However, the activity is different at acidic and alkaline pHs; the former produced DPAH polymers and the latter produced DPAH dimers. These results were supported by previous literature [37,40]. Moreover, the concentration of DPAH is influencing the electropolymerization process.

Also, with increasing the number of scans, the height of peak a2 increased proportional to c1, while that of peak a1 decreased. In the light of the results reported for electropolymerization of diphenylamine [30–33] and the above observations, the mechanism presented in Scheme 1 is proposed for electropolymerization of NPAA on GCE. The difference observed between the first and subsequent cycles indicates that the radical cations generated immediately on electrode at the relatively high positive potential of +0.5 V undergo further reaction to produce dimers, which are more easily oxidized than the parent compound to generate dimer radical cations.

In the case of the DPA+. cation radicals, the dimerization process leads to the formation of diphenylbenzidine (DPBH2) [17–19]. During cathodic scanning, a reduction peak appears in the potential range 0.46–0.55 V vs. Ag/AgCl when the electrochemical polymerization of DPA in the presence of the semi-aqueous solution of HCl and H3PW12O40 occurs on the blank Pt electrode.

During the cathodic scan, a maximum of reduction at +0.206 V appears. According to previous studies, the oxidation peak localized at +0.778 V is attributed to the formation of diphenylbenzidine (DPBH2) [19–21], while the oxidation maxima at +0.262 and +0.419 V are associated with the attachment of H3PMo12O40 heteropolyanions to DPA dication radicals. A major difference is pointed out in the absence of the oxidation peak at +0.778 V vs. SCE when the cyclic voltammogram is recorded on the SWNT film deposited onto a Pt electrode.

In the first five cycles, the gradual increase in intensity of the anodic and cathodic peaks with repeating sweeps indicates that the reaction product is gradually deposited both on the pure Pt electrode and on the SWNT film electrode. Voltammograms recorded on the blank Pt electrode reveal an oxidation peak at 627 mV assigned to the formation of DPA cation radical (DPA+) when C–C para-coupled dimerization takes place, resulting in the formation of diphenylbenzidine (DPBH2) [15–17]. A second oxidation process, taking place in the potential range (+750; +950) mV, leads to the formation of the DPA2+ dication.
