Abstract

The electrocatalytic reduction of acrolein and crotonaldehyde has been studied at a platinized platinum electrode in acidic medium (1 M H2SO4). Formation of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons (propane, propene and butane, butene respectively) was observed. The possible reaction routes are discussed in the light of previous studies carried out with unsaturated alcohols and saturated carbonyl compounds.

The origins of ageing processes and the changes in selectivity are also discussed.
