Abstract

Polyalkylcyanoacrylate nanoparticles can be produced by a dispersion polymerization process carried out in an aqueous phase at a low pH employing a polymeric stabilizing agent. The influence of stabilizers such as dextrans, non-ionic surfactants (poloxamers and Tweens), and β-cyclodextrin on the particle size and particle size distribution of poly(butyl 2-cyanoacrylate) nanoparticles was investigated. Particle size characterization was performed mainly by photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). The molecular weight and concentration of the dextrans and non-ionic surfactants were shown to be important factors in controlling the diameter of the nanoparticles in the range of 20–770 nm. By using β-cyclodextrin it was possible to produce nanoparticles with a diameter of about 3000 nm. The results have been interpreted by reference to the accepted theories of steric stabilization and dispersion polymerization and a model is proposed for nanoparticle formation in the presence of dextran.

Briefly, 1% (v/v) BCA monomer was dissolved in 1 mL EtOAc as oil phase. 1% (w/v) dextran 70 (Dougles & Davis, 1985) and 0.5% (w/v) pluronic F68 were dissolved in 5 mL ultrapure water as the water phase. To compare the solvency effect in a different phase, 2 mg EGCG was added in the water and oil phase, respectively, and then sonicated for 1 min.

Anionic polymerization reaction and mini-emulsion polymerization are two common methods to produce PBCA NPs [19–21]. During preparation of NPs, there are several factors such as monomer concentration, the stabiliser concentration, pH, stirring pointed speed and preparation method influencing characteristics of NPs [22–25]. In this study, mini-emulsion method was used for the preparation of NPs.

From the above analysis, three independent variables have the significant effect on Pae@PNCs particle size. The reason of influence from pH and Pluronic F-68 concentration on the particle size formation have been described and explained, respectively, according to the reported papers (Behan et al., 2001; Saade et al., 2015; Douglas et al., 1985). However, the content of α-BCA had not any influenced significantly on the particle size (Rollot et al., 1986).
