The ionic behavior of fatty acids solubilized by bile salts

Abstract

The influence of different bile salts on the ionic behavior of oleic acid, in the presence and absence of salt, has been investigated symmetrically by a titration study. The effect of ionic strength, degree of ionization, and the ratio oleic acid bile salt, on the composition and size of the mixed micelles in these systems has been determined by means of the light-scattering technique, and the equilibrium of the system has been discussed. Application of the general theory describing the potentiometric titrations of polyelectrolytes has shown that the modifications of pH of oleic acid systems on addition of a micellar solubilizing agent may be satisfactorily accounted for by the variations of the electrostatic forces of the system which accompany changes in micellar size and composition.

      Moreover, it is well known that mixing of fatty acid soaps/fatty acids with other surfactants or alcohols in aqueous solution can lead to the formation of mixed aggregates, which alter their properties compared to those of the pure fatty acid soap solutions.
