The combination of excess activity in pathways of lipid metabolism with increased generation of ROS forms lipid peroxides in nuclear and mitochondrial membranes [43–45] which are sources of free radicals in the nucleus that modify DNA [46]. Because folate metabolism and choline metabolism are intermingled, perturbing metabolism of choline results in compensatory changes in folate-related metabolic pathways [47–49].
