Abstract

Correlations have been investigated between the content of short isotactic segments and thermal properties in some propylene/olefin random copolymers. Polypropylene copolymers modified by ethylene show variations different from those for copolymers modified by ethylene and butene. However, in both cases, the weldability temperature decreases on increasing the comonomer concentration.

Thus, the slowly crystallized iPP homopolymer exhibits the diffractions corresponding to both the monoclinic α lattice and the orthorhombic γ modification, with a majority in the first one, judging from the relative intensities of the (130) reflection from the monoclinic α polymorph [23] and of the characteristic (117) reflection stemming from the orthorhombic γ cell [24]. Presence of comonomers in the S specimens of T4-75Pe-25Hp, T4-50Pe-50Hp, and T4-25Pe-75Hp significantly favors the formation of γ crystallites [25], [26], [27]. Monoclinic α crystals are, however, the unique polymorph in the Q samples for this overall composition (and for the homopolymer).

The γ-polymorph was found in PP of very low molar mas [ 7–9]. It was also observed in propylene copolymers with small content of 1-olefine co-units [10–16] as well as in metallocene PP of high molar mass with stereo- or regio-chain irregularities [17–21] because chain defects enforce crystallization of relatively short isotactic sequences in the extended form [19]. For the formation of the γ-phase the effective average length of isotactic sequences is crucial [22,23], and because of that the effects of stereo- and regio-defects on the γ-content are similar [24].

The presence of comonomer causes major structural defects in the polymer chain, which leads to shorter crystallizable sequences, favoring the formation of γ−crystals. The present results are in line with the work of other researchers [15,44]. It is also important to remark that crystallinity hardly changes with the 5% mol counits of the analyzed comonomers and terpolymer, and independently of the thermal treatment in relation to the homopolymer.
