Abstract

  • 1.

    1. An enzyme homologous with mammalian trypsin and chymotrypsin was isolated from Renilla reniformis, a coelenterate.

  • 2.

    2. Some of its properties, including amino acid composition, pH profile, temperature of maximum activity, requirements for stability and the effect of inhibitors were determined, and these were compared with those of other well-characterized trypsins.

  • 3.

    3. Evidence for a zymogen form was presented.

  • 4.

    4. The enzyme was found to be quite unstable, probably as a result of its high number of basic amino acid residues.
