Postmortem findings of malignant pleural mesothelioma: A two-center study of 318 patients
2012, ChestCitation Excerpt :Mesothelioma is often considered locally invasive, and distant metastases are perceived as relatively uncommon. Previous studies have reported the presence of mesothelioma at distant sites, but the pattern and incidence varied among reports.8–11,16–25 Therapeutic attempts to eradicate tumors from within the pleural cavity, however, have not been successful.
Malignant pleural mesothelioma
2005, American Journal of the Medical SciencesCitation Excerpt :Although distant hematogenous dissemination to remote viscera was once thought uncommon, autopsy experience refutes this.79 One-third to one-half of patients may have distant metastases discovered at postmortem examination, including opposite lung, liver, kidney, adrenal gland, and bone.80 In patients with potentially resectable disease, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been recommended to assist in local staging.
