The neuroimmunology of degeneration and regeneration in the peripheral nervous system
2015, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :No change in the number or activation of microglia surrounding projection neurons in the cortex was found after pyramidotomy (Leong et al., 1995). In the red nucleus variable results were observed in microglia after rubrospinal tract injury; however, even in the study in which microglial activation was reported, it was minimal compared to that seen for microglia surrounding cranial and spinal motor neurons (Barron et al., 1990; Shokouhi et al., 2010). Shokouhi and colleagues asked the provocative question as to what would happen if these CNS axons were induced to regenerate (Shokouhi et al., 2010).
