Abstract

2,5-Diphenylfuran was used in a spectrophotometric assay for singlet O2 to determine if this species were present during the reaction of catalase (H2O2:H2O2 oxidoreductase, EC 1.11.1.6) with 2H2O2. Since 2,5-diphenylfuran is a better singlet O2 trap in 2H2O than in H2O, all measurements have been made in 2H2O. Under these conditions less than 0.5% of the total O2 formed in the decomposition of 2H2O2 by catalase was released from the enzyme as singlet O2.
