On this basis, the most potent uncouplers, when this is taken into account, give full uncoupling at ‘substoichiometric concentrations,’ i.e. concentrations that are lower than the number of molecules of respiratory chain complexes or ATP synthases (Terada, 1975, 1981; Terada & van Dam, 1975). ( Both chemiosmotic coupling and ‘direct’ coupling methods can accommodate such findings, as we shall discuss shortly.)
