Abstract

Although it is important to realize that the occurrence of a viral infection during pregnancy followed by the delivery of a congenitally defective child is not necessarily a cause-and-effect relationship, the obstetrician should be aware of the potential viral teratogens as to their effects during the gestation or upon the subsequent progeny. In this paper, known viral teratogens are reviewed with special emphasis upon human effects, and viral maternal-fetal interactions are discussed in general and specifically. Experimental guidelines useful in determining the teratogenic potential of a virus are reviewed. However, the experimental guidelines established cannot be followed in the pregnant woman. Nevertheless, the obstetrician is faced with an especially unique opportunity to determine the etiology of congenital defects. Thus, clinical guidelines are proposed to assist the physician in determining whether or not a virus is a teratogen.
