Abstract
A systematic set of borate glasses doped with TiO2 were successfully synthesized by using a conventional melt and quench-casting technique. Initial experimental results from XRD evaluation show that no identifiable crystalline species are present in any glass samples, which confirm the amorphous nature of these glasses. Studying the UV-absorption edge, indirect allowed transitions with their optical energy gaps are carried out and the Urbach energy is evaluated. From the extinction coefficient (k) data, the Fermi energy of the glasses is calculated. A simple program was built up to compute the refractive index n using the obtained data of transmittance T(λ) and reflectance R(λ). The complex dielectric constant, dissipation factor tanδ, optical conductivity σopt, volume energy loss and surface energy loss functions were calculated and interpreted.
