Abstract

The principal surgical options for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma are pleurectomy and decortication or extrapleural pneumonectomy. Although previously associated with high lethality rates, extrapleural pneumonectomy can be performed today at experienced centers with the same risk of lethality as standard pneumonectomy. This article provides a description of both surgical procedures and discusses complications, clinical results and recurrence patterns. In addition, the staging system proposed by the International Mesothelioma Interest Group (IMIG) and other prognostic parameters are detailed. Mention is also made of the pathological and epidemiological characteristics of malignant plural mesothelioma.
