Abstract
Microbial bioactive compounds are one of the most natural and raw form of chemical metabolites present in nature. There has been recently an increasing interest in the use of microorganisms for the isolation and production of metabolites for application in health care. A large number of microbial metabolites have been isolated and screened for the treatment of human diseases. Here, we review microbial isolates having antidiabetic, anticancerous, antibacterial and antifungal properties. The advanced automated equipments have allowed to screen a large number of microbial compounds in vitro. Yet there are still major challenges for the delivery of bioactive compounds in vivo. Here, we focus on microbial metabolites used as therapeutics, and delivery routes of microbial metabolites in vivo.
