Summary

The ARTRO Group began using HA coated implants in 1985. Even if all the questions concerning HA are not yet answered, we have learnt a lot from this experience based on more than 7,800 implantations, so far. The outcome is now quite clear, and there is a large consensus in the clinical, radiological and histological fields. The HA advantages are recognized by all the orthopaedic community, notably in terms of pain relief, functional ability and radiological evidences. We cannot speak of real drawbacks, but several questions concerning the future are still open.
