Abstract

In the elderly, the limitations of pharmacological treatments and potential side effects have encouraged the emergence of dance as a therapeutic alternative. We propose a systematic review of the literature on the effect of dancing on the health of older people. We extracted 48 articles published between 2003 and 2014 in the PubMed and Cochrane research bases. 24 randomized studies, 14 literature reviews and meta-analysis were identified. The proof of concept is limited. However, a positive effect is reported on physical, cognitive and psychosocial health of the elderly but the standard of proof remains low. The therapeutic benefit should be supported by new data from randomized controlled trials.
