Multipel myeloom (ziekte van Kahler) is een kwaadaardige woekering van plasmacellen in het beenmerg. Tot de zeer diverse klinische verschijnselen behoren onder andere botaantasting, anemie, recidiverende infecties, hypercalciëmie en nierfalen. De meeste patiënten zijn helaas nog niet te genezen, maar er is de laatste jaren aanzienlijke vooruitgang geboekt bij de behandeling. Autologe stamceltransplantatie (voor patiënten jonger dan 65 jaar) en nieuwe middelen zoals thalidomide, lenalidomide en bortezomib (voor alle leeftijden) hebben de prognose fors verbeterd.

Multiple myeloma (Kahler’s disease) is a malignant proliferation of plasma cells in bone marrow. The varied clinical signs and symptoms of the disease include bone lesions, anaemia, recurrent infections, hypercalcaemia, and renal failure. Although at the moment most patients cannot be cured, in recent years huge advances have been made in treatment. Autologous stem cell transplantation (for patients younger than 65 years) and the introduction of new drugs, such as thalidomide, lenalidomide, and bortezomib (for patients of all ages), have substantially improved the prognosis.
