Synthesis of 2-aroyl-1-hydroxy-4,5-dimethylimidazoles by reaction of 3-hydroxyamino-2-butanone oxime with arylglyoxals*

  • Published:
Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds Aims and scope

Treatment of the acetate of 3-hydroxyamino-2-butanone oxime with arylglyoxals gives α-aroylnitrones which cyclize under acid catalyzed conditions to form principally 2-aroyl-1-hydroxy-4,5-dimethyl-imidazoles. An X-ray structural analysis of 2-benzoyl-1-hydroxy-4,5-dimethylimidazole has been carried out.
