Abstract
This chapter describes the syntheses and recent applications of some novel neoglycocon-jugates with an emphasis on a rather narrow number of key carbohydrate structures of special interest to modern glycobiology. The description is limited to those carbohydrates used as ligands by an increasing number of endogenous plant and animal lectins involved in recognition processes. A brief introduction to carbohydrate-protein interactions will be given to stress the need for multivalent neoglycoconjugates. Since the members of the neoglycoconjugate family are steadily increasing as a result of the demand for higher affinity and better specificity, an overview of new glycoforms covering the last ten years is presented with emphasis on work originating from our laboratory. Thus, glycopolymers, telomers, glycodendrimers glycopeptoids, and more recent calix[4]arenes will be discussed. Particular attention is given to sialic acid and sialyloligosaccharides, together with mannosides, and galactosides as these carbohydrate residues represent immunodominant structural elements.
