Abstract
An investigation of the removal of finely divided silica, coal, and alumina particles less than 20µm in size has been carried out using liquid fluidized and packed beds. The bed particles used included 48×100, 100×150, and 150×200-mesh silica, corundum, and ilmenite particles. Important variables examined included surface charge, flow rate, pH and amount of bed particles. Surface charge has been identified as the most important variable in this system. Van der Waals force also assumes a very important role in the recovery of fine particles in fluidized and packed beds. In addition to interaction between large and fine particles, interaction between fine particles themselves assumes an important role in the overall recovery.
