Summary
The scanning electron microscope has been used to follow the changes induced by radiation in the surface structure of the small intestinal mucosa in mice. Attention is drawn to changes in the surface creases which are a normal feature of the intestinal villus. There is a progressive disintegration of villous architecture leading finally to gross surface irregularity. The appearances are quite different from those seen in the “villous atrophy” of human coeliac disease.
