Transport of ions of one kind through thin membranes

III. Current-voltage curves for membrane-soluble ions

Summary

Transport of membrane-permeable ions through a hydrophobic membrane separating two aqueous phases is treated within the framework of the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations. Specifically considered are transport through the stagnant (Nernst) and space charge (Gouy-Chapman) layers in the aqueous solutions and partition equilibrium or first-order phase transfer kinetics at the water/membrane interfaces. In all cases the calculated conductance is found to reach a maximum value at high ionic concentrations.
