Summary
Recent studies on the morphology of polyethylene single crystals are being reviewed with special emphasis on the relation between external habit and molecular fine structure. After recapitulating briefly the main observations leading to the recognition of chain folding the more detailed features of monolayer crystal configurations are systematised. It is demonstrated how the analysis of such features can lead to further conclusions and suggestions as regards the nature of the chain folded structure. Features which have been revealed or suggested include the existence of chain folded ribbons along the prism faces, and the ‘staggering’ of the folds in a regular manner. The detailed analysis of this staggering has led to suggestions on the nature and structure of the fold, and indicated a preference for a particular type of ribbon stacking, and has lent support to ideas on chain folded crystal growth postulated in connection with some of the crystallization theories. A brief description is included on some features of multilayer development and on the most recent investigations on the morphology of the bulk. These last studies reveal an unexpectedly close similarity between the crystalline entities grown from solution and the melt both as regards external morphology and diffraction behaviour.
