Summary
On 265 muscle spindle afferents from the ankle extensors and pretibial flexors of the cat the bimodality of conduction velocities, originally noted by Hunt (1954) has been confirmed, and especially for the flexors completed. Genuine early discharges activated by fibres conducting at α velocity and coincide in time with the incipient contraction of their muscles of origin did occur not only in primary but also in secondary muscle spindle afferents. The percentage of endings capable of discharging genuine early spikes was found to be for primary muscle spindle afferents 21.1% out of a total of 170, for secondary muscle spindle afferents 7.3% of 95.
