Transepidermal water loss on the hands in Atopic Dermatitis

  • Published:
Archiv für dermatologische Forschung Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

In 14 patients with atopic dermatitis and in controls the transepidermal water loss was measured in dorsal skin of hands by an electrolytic water analyser. Uninvolved as well as some cases with dry but not inflamed skin were used. A significant increase of transepidermal water loss was found in atopic dermatitis. Transepidermal water loss was simultaneously measured with skin surface lipids remaining on the hands. It was assumed that qualitative changes in the skin lipids, by influencing water-binding substances, may play a role in increased transepidermal water loss.
