Summary
Under certain conditions the meiotic (and consequently genetic) system of allopolyploids offers advantages over that of autopolyploids. It has appeared possible to convert the meiotic system of autopolyploids partially or completely into that of allopolyploids (allopolyploidization). A critical discussion of the utility, and the possibilities and limitations of this conversion is given, considering purpose (fertility, fixation of heterosis, rapid stabilization) and breeding system (self-fertilizers, cross-fertilizers, hybrid strains).
