Abstract
The structure of molecular aggregates of the photosynthetic pigment violaxanthin has been studied using electron and vibrational absorption spectroscopies and the diffractometric method. The results discussed in terms of the exciton-splitting theory lead to the conclusion that the aggregated forms of violaxanthin are organized as planar structures: about 40 molecules wide and 2 molecules high. The biological importance of the occurrence of violaxanthin in an aggregated form is also discussed.
