Summary

The perfused rabbit's ear, connected with the body only through the N. auricularis magnus, has been used to study the influence of drugs on cutaneous sensory pathways. Stimulation of these afferent fibers elicted a reflex fall of the blood pressure and a rise of the respiration.

Stimulation has been possible by injection of acetylcholine and other ganglionic excitatory substances into the ear and could be inhibited by hexamethonium, but not by atropin. Substance P leads to a stimulation of the afferent fibers which could not be inhibited by hexamethonium. Cocain inhibited all kind of peripheral stimuli.
