Silver impregnation of degenerating dendrites, cells and axons central to axonal transection II. A nauta study on spinal motor neurones in kittens

Summary

Nauta stained sections from lumbosacral cord segments were examined in two groups of kittens. In one group the sciatic nerve had been transected and in the other group ventral root fibres. Selective impregnation was found of dendrites, cells, axons and probably to some extent also of myelin sheaths of transected neurones. The number of impregnated neurones was rather restricted. It was lower than the number of chromatolytic neurones. The findings are in agreement with those reported previously by the author, from a study of hypoglossal neurones in kittens. Similarities between the results achieved with the present technique and the Golgi method are discussed. It is suggested that the present method may be useful also for studying recurrent motor axon collaterals. The findings lend further support to the assumption that the employed technique may be used as a supplementary technique in experimental neuroanatomy.
