Abstract
Engaging property owners to reduce carbon emissions as well as add financial value when renovating requires an understanding of changing media and commercial contexts. Renovators are immersed in a media environment in which lifestyle and property TV programmes are widely viewed and linked to social media and online property portals. Layered media offer celebrity influencers and curated access to products used on the TV shows and recommended professionals/practitioners. Renovators use a variety of intermediaries ranging from building professionals/practitioners to online forums to share/exchange ideas. Engaging renovators to pursue low carbon renovations involves inserting energy-efficient ideas, products and suppliers/installers in current layered media or attempting to develop additional ones to engage renovators in a conversational way on how they can achieve homes which are more liveable, less energy-intensive and have added value.
