Abstract
The present work investigates the corrosion resistance characteristics of automobile lug nuts under accelerated and normal conditions for determining the mass loss and surface properties. The study has been performed on different samples made of brass, steel and coated steel samples coated with zinc and copper. The experiments were carried out on the different samples in the standard salt bath for a specific time, and mass loss has been calculated as per the ASTM standards. The resistance of coated steel lug nut for corrosion has been studied, and the influence of surface treatments has been assessed for the economic and their survival. From the experiments conducted, the coated samples have shown better corrosion resistance properties than the steel and their survival was comparatively better than the steel samples. Even though samples made of brass shown better corrosion resistance, their cost is being high. From the investigation, it has been inferred that the heat-treated samples with zinc coating would reasonably show better performance with respect to cost and service conditions.
