Nonheadache Disorders and Characteristics of Cluster Headache Patients

  • Chapter
Cluster Headache

Abstract

Cluster headache stands far and above most other headache conditions in its distinctive stereotypical clinical presentation. The incidence of cluster headache is estimated at 1% or less.1 In 1969 and later in 19722,3, Graham described a constellation of somatic and personality traits believed to characterize many, if not most, cluster headache patients. These astute observations, together with earlier ones, prompted further consideration of the physical features, accompanying medical disorders, and psychological profiles of patients with cluster headache.1,4–16 This paper reviews the current understanding of the nonheadache features and medical conditions of cluster headache patients. When possible, attention will be paid to any existing differences between chronic and episodic subtypes.
