Yield processes in glassy polymers

  • Chapter
The Physics of Glassy Polymers

Abstract

Virtually all solid polymers — amorphous polymers below the glass transition temperature T g or crystalline polymers below the melting temperature T m — undergo a permanent shape change when subjected to a stress of sufficient magnitude. This chapter focuses on the onset of irreversible deformations in glassy polymers, i.e. the transition from elastic to plastic behaviour. Reversible elastic and linear viscoelastic deformations, which result from small stresses with corresponding strains ε < 0.01, were treated in Chapter 3. Chapter 5 addresses large irreversible strains and associated phenomena that develop after the transition.
